I've been compositing for a long time and only just learned of

Stand by for maintenance...

We all are, Lydia dear :-) Some more lost than others, but we all are lost...

Here's the link to the linked layers...

We hope this technical glitch has not disturbed your schedule.

The disturbance to my schedule can never be remedied, I'm sorry to say :-) But thanks for the (corrected) link, good stuff.

ETA: Do NOT try this in the DPC metaverse, it's a totally verboten expansion of image area :-) But still, it's a very cool tool :-)

ETA: Belay that, apparently I was watching a different video...

Would it though? If you selected the image (or part thereof for that matter) and created a new layer for adjustments, why would it be any different to if you created a new PS document and used that file as a linked layer?

So I don’t understand what you mean by an expansion of the image area. I watched the video and thought it was mainly about organising layers, with an additional benefit of retaining image elements in an unchanged state even if you perform edits on the master document.

Sheesh, the video that showed up for me was on the new photoshop beta tool for expanding image area, and it's mind-boggling...

I think that was the one that followed. The link took me to the end of the Linked Layers one and I manually moved it to the beginning.

You hit the nail on the head, compadre!

Now, having watched that, I have to say my slowly-ossifying mind is telling me to mind my own beeswax and not even TRY to make such a deep dive :-) But, to be fair, I don't do compositing very much at ALL so basically this is telling me where to go if I want to get good at it, which I'm not sure I do :-)

But what a heck of a tool!

I watched it (the correct one) and found it interesting, but more work that I usually do things like that.

Holy cats, by the end I was just in awe... as much of his use of keyboard shortcuts (just how many does he actually know???) as of the Linked Layers capability. I can certainly see some cases where linked layers could be a boon. For myself, I'm thinking cases where I am stacking lots of high-resolution images. If I have 60 source images, for instance, I could do them as 10 groups of 6, or 5 groups of 12. Definitely something I will keep in my back pocket.

My thinking, exactly. I don't think this applies to most composites, just ones with hundreds of layers and assets.
