| Hi, pls check a member called "advertising", s/he sent me a private message telling me an email s/he sent to my address bounced, and I should update my email "here" (here being a link) :-( |

| That an in-house account used by Admins. I'll check with them, but is probably legit. Good to check though. |

Hi Gaby,
I can confirm that the "Advertising" account is a valid account used by the site administration. There may well be an email issue, you may want to confirm that you can receive emails from DPC. Check your email address on record in your preferences, and update as needed if it is out of date. |

also, you don't have to use the link. that's how I ease my mind when I'm not sure something is spam (phishing). I do what the message asks without following any links.

Okay, why is it sending a message to a member without IDing itself and stating that it's an official account and with some recognizable indication of that fact?
I looked that account up and it looks like a bogus account.

Why is it telling said member to change info and sending a link that is questionable according to general 'Net practices?
How and why was it generated and how are we supposed to deal with hat's effectively SPAM/phishing?
'Cause that's certainly what it appears to be.
If that's a legit entity, why is it sending this massage to a decade plus member that they do NOT recognize?
Messages from administration should be easily identifiable, recognizable, and with the knowledge of people responsible for the day to day activity.
As sophisticated as 'Net baddies are getting, this is *REALLY* not cool!

| Jeb, I agree with your stance on how this "looks." It is likely a hold-over from long ago, but what may have been acceptable practice 20 years ago is not today. I am going to ping Mita and direct him to this thread. We should take some action to make sure that we are not generating official messages that look for all the world like phishing. |

The account has 3 challenge entries. I've seen dodgier than that! It looks like this is the account used to post an actual image from a famous photographer in a "style of" topic in their name. It's always fun to see the real thing perform mediocre with the DPC collective.

It is also used to automatically generate an SC-only discussion thread for each challenge as it is posted. Because of the way the site is coded a "user" is required for some operations. |

TL;DR: The messages are legitimate messages sent automatically by the system. The sender account is now called  DPC-System to make it more obvious.
Longer story:
Our email service provider requires that bounced email is managed. The PM is generated when an email sent by the system is bounced. A bounced email address is added into a stoplist so the system no longer sends to this address. The PM is to let the affected user know about it and attempt to rectify the situation, e.g. by providing a current working address. Note that the bouncing situation may be temporary. If this is the case, please contact the admins so the address is removed from the stoplist.

I am away, the email is one I use on my PC at home.
I assume I can check on that when I get home? That would be next week.
There "should't" be an issue, but in the last few years the ..... (whatever in the system) occasionally "decides" that it thinks an email his dodgy and blocks that email address. Friend of mine who often communicates via email had to start a new email address, because me "security whatever" kept blocking her address ... rolling eyes.
As you can see, I know N O T H I N G about all that stuff.
I will check when I get home. Maybe my box is full on the server ... |
