to answer Gaby kasaba ..
this little guy .. about 6mm or 7mm long .. maybe a bit more than an eighth of an inch long .. was soaking up the sun on an old water tank near my front door ..
there were only these sort of flies around .. and they are quite flighty .. but if you move really slowly the occasional one will stay still for a couple of shots ..
the end of my lens is about 4 or 5 inches away from the insect .. some fly off when you get close .. some dont .. and they are the sort of flies that are annoying .. if you swat them away they come back .. so i dont think they are hugely afraid of the lens ..
being summer here they are much harder to photograph .. being really active .. in winter flies are slower and more sluggish ..

thanks so much for the recognition during voting Johanna tanguera .. xxx
and thankyou everyone who may got over their aversion to flies to give this little guy a good score .. :)

used a 36mm extension tube on the 100mm macro lens .. ..and speedlight external flash ..

I have to say that I don't miss Australian flies!! They are so persistent, in the north I had to wear a full veil to be able to stay outdoors. We crossed Simpson Desert years ago and camped in the middle of it, 400km away from any kind of civilization. When we got out of the car we thought OMG, finally no flies!! BUT 10 minutes later the first one arrived followed by others! They flew 400km to annoy us!! ;)

Anyway, fantastic image, Roz :) Congrats on HM.

Ho do you do it? Maybe your flies are more relaxed than African flies :-))). Ours don't sit still :-) Fantastic shot
