As I was leaving the golf course I saw a multitude of birds swirling around in the sky. It was a cold and windy day. I tried to follow them in the car but they reversed direction and headed the opposite way. I turned around to follow them as I thought they might be headed for a large field of corn not far away. Luckily I was right. They had landed in the field. There were thousands of starlings resting and grazing. I pulled my car up a dirt road, parked and walked towards them. I always have my camera with me and attached was my 400mm lens and 1.4X extender. I took some practice pictures and the exposure was perfect. All of a sudden the birds took flight and I began shooting. I must have taken a 100 pictures of them as they swarmed around the field and then disappeared out of sight. What an amazingly beautiful experience!

A wonderful capture, with the tree providing added visual interest and a sense of the scale of the gathering, and an interesting sky as a backdrop to it all.

We get murmurations of Tree swallows on the outer Cape. They drop in to feed on certain berries, in addition to their more usual diet of insects, during their migration along the Atlantic coast.

What are starlings? (Though I have seen similar behavior in other birds, notably migrating red wing blackbirds. Memorable sight and experience indeed!)

Starlings! And a flock of them are well worth watching in flight. Don't love them so much when they poop all over my house on the way by :-(
