I waited too long to start this shot. I really would have liked to go up to Chincoteague and do one of my snowy egret shots, but that's 3.5 hours of driving one way, and I didn't have the time.

So I kept putting it off.

So I figured what I did have was the signature subject of squirrels -- even though it's been a really long time since I've done backyard squirrels.

Usually I need a couple of days to pull this off. It takes the squirrels quite a while to get used to things, so I introduce background first, then table, etc.

But it was the final day. So I put it all out at once.

It took about 6 hours to get the shot. Usually I sit in the kitchen reading or cleaning and watch what was going on. But that wasn't going to work that day. So I hooked my Sony up remotely to my ipad and watched it remotely! The software wasn't working correctly, so I had my handheld remote and used that.

Moriarty was relegated to another room and I had my backdoor open so I didn't have to shoot through the glass.

During the 6 hours we had three birds come in to the house. The first Carolina wren came in, perched on a chair for a short time and then flew out. The tufted titmouse was more conufused and had to be herded out.

Usually I do the squirrel shots on the deck railing, but I really wanted the camera to be turned at an angle and the squirrel partially behind, so I had to use this setup. So the background was hung over the deck railing and I brought a table outside and used that.

If I would have done it over multiple days, it would have been fun to have something in front of the camera that he was photographing.

The lighting was complete shade with no interesting light, so I had to do a lot of processing.

Thanks for the comments!

Congratulations
Wow, a well designed image, perfectly presented, crisp, clear with beautiful colors. I love how you mastered this squirrel. On a scale of 1 to 10 this is a 15.
I voted 10 there was no 15. Hats off to you!

I think there's only one photographer at DPC who can pull this shot off! And was not her goal once to bring back a squirrel to her profile page? :-)

I suspect vawendy, because, obviously, it's a squirrel, and an uncommonly cooperative one at that. Really great image thanks to the model ... OK, and the photographer ;-)

I guess this is vawendy although it seems more like an homage to vawendy than a shot in vawendy's style.
