 This was the most unafraid box turtle I've ever come across. Usually, if you get within a few feet of them they start shutting down and withdraw into their shell. Not this guy. I swear he was coming after me!!! I'd get down to ground level and he'd get closer. Eventually I picked him up and moved him out of the driveway in case we had any deliveries coming.

Originally, I spotted this one with one other (which I'd never seen before - two of them together). I snapped a couple of pics to show my wife and son and went about my business. It was only later when I found this one wandering around that I thought to get a more interesting image. The other one of the two hadn't moved much (only enough to get under some leaves a bit).

Oh, it was Fierce all right! At least in how it handled what could have been a stressful scenario. Maybe Fiesty would be a better description of the behavior, but that doesn't match the "facial" expression as well IMO. :-)

Yeah, okay.....Fierce??? Biggest worry with one of these is that you may get peed on if you pick it up. LOL! 6

Pretty turtle; nicely detailed and I love the staring eye contact. I think he wanted you out of his space.

He sure is! Speaking of which, I just came across an X-ray profile view of an entire turtle and realized, to my amazement, that the "shells" are part of their skeletal structure. In other words, you can't remove a turtle or tortoise from its shell. I don't know why that surprised me, but it was an aha moment. I digress. Wonderful image!
