Challenge: Rock Song Titles (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: 2009 - CHALLENGES
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Location: on the firetrail
Date: Mar 24, 2009
Aperture: f9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/125+ExtFlash
Galleries: Macro, Insects, etc
Date Uploaded: Mar 24, 2009

when this challenge was announced i went to yahoo answers .. its a great site if you have any question at all ..
i asked if there were any rock songs with an insect in the title & got quite a lot of answers ..
i went for a walk specifically to get something for the challenge .. was hoping i'd be able to get a fly for the U2 track ..
heard a buzzing, slightly different from the more common ugly flies, and noticed this unusual yellow faced fly .. he moved around quite a bit & i didnt think i had any keepers because he flew off after i only got a few shots ... its impossible to see if the focus is right in the camera with a macro ..
i went back the next day hoping to get something better coz i wasnt totally happy with the ones i had .. saw a similar fly but couldnt get any shots coz katee scared him away .. i havent seen any since ..

i considered two other photographs for this challenge .. one which seemed a bit more interactive coz his leg was up and you could almost imagine he was dancing ... but his body and wing werent as defined as the one i chose to enter in the challenge..

and another one facing me ..

i did the same sort'v process on all of them because it worked for me .. his incredible yellow face and irridescent body were lost in the brown/red background & it being a pretty grungy song i felt that the selective desat/contrasty look was fitting ..
also i cropped quite tight so that he was larger to view .. its better for seeing the details of a macro in dpc ..
this is the original ..

i'm getting 6.9748 about an hour before rollover which is a brilliant score considering my daughter said it looked really gross .. !!
so no matter where this comes in the challenge thankyou everyone for your votes and comments .. :)

2hrs after rollover ..
just did a search to find out wot sort'v fly this is .. it could be a
snail parasitic blowfly

Congratulations on the ribbon, Roz. What a strange fly that is. His yellow face looks like a mask with a seam up the middle of it. The colours on his body are beautiful and the detail is quite incredible. The desat makes him pop.

Heysoos H. Christos, Roz ... It has to be real as even SF FX specialists couldn't come up with something like that. I would never believe something like that existed.

Well ... seriously ... I think there would be museums and insect reference libraries that would be very interested in that shot.

It's a freaking masterpiece.

P.S. I hope I didn't get any drool on your lens ...

This is one of the finest macro shots I have seen on the site. I did not vote on this challenge because I entered it, but when I seen it I actually wondered if it was a real fly because it was so perfect. The yellow with the hairs coming out looked almost like stitches on a stuffed fly or something. I think the selective desat also made it seem surreal to me. I have never been a fan of that technique, but it certainly makes your fly stand out from the background. I mean that as a compliment, that it looked so incredible it was hard to imagine that it was real. Great work and congrats on an amazing image. :)
