This was my entry

and this is another version with slightly different setting and lighting

The second one is probably more interesting and bizarre, but I chose the first one since I thought it better communicated the sense of motion.

Both shots were taken using Olympus' proprietary "LiveComp" mode that allows to take arbitrarily long exposures easily, without danger of overexposing the background. In both of these photos I opened the shutter for about 200 sec and lighted the snail with a low-intensity ambient light while it was busy crawling across the blue cardboard, and finished the exposure with a small flash. We made about 20 of those attempts, so the poor snail was exhausted and eventually stopped moving and fell asleep. I was exhausted too, so we called it a day, and I let her go back into the wild.

Right choice.

Much prefer the trail not taken, "interesting and bizarre" indeed. I don't think the challenge was aimed at conveying anything; rather an opportunity to explore as you did and tell a new tale.

It was 10 from me.
The snail’s house has a quality of a sparkling jewel carried to eternity. Among other qualities, the shot is mesmerizing.
That fact that you took multiple shots is intimidating.
The other version would have been 10 also, hmm perhaps 9 since it’s too visceral.

Thank y'all for the comments! I realize the challenge didn't stipulate anything, it's just that I had this idea in my head to create motion streaks behind a snail as if it was lightning-fast. The second photo did not convey the sense of motion, so I discarded it. But it was indeed super interesting to see the emerging "trail" structure, it actually showed that the snail in fact moves forward non-uniformly and also sways its shell from left to right a little bit. Maybe I should send it to the National Geographic ))

The reason I had to do many shots was that the snail kept turning off from the designated straight path from left to write and move towards the background. I could not figure out a way to control it. Also, balancing the ambient light with the flash was not trivial, either the flash was too weak and didn't freeze motion in the last moment, or was too strong to completely obliterate the motion streaks.

was a pic i wont forget in a long time .. definitely a very special image ..
and realizing everything that went into it makes it even more astounding ..
i really did laugh out loud though when i read this bit in your comment .. "The reason I had to do many shots was that the snail kept turning off from the designated straight path." .. a snail having a designated straight path cracked me up .. ;)
