 used 36mm extension tube on 100mm macro lens .. and focused in as close as it allowed me to go.. extra light source was from speedlight 600EX-RT external flash ..

this little guy was quite small for a robberfly .. probably not much more than half an inch long .. thats the sun rising behind him ..
to get this shot was very difficult .. just to get his eye in focus was a major challenge .. i deleted most of the photos I took..
usually when i shoot insects i'll shoot from further away .. that way its easier to get more of the insect in focus .. then i'll crop later in photoshop ..
i've never tried to shoot an insect without the intention of cropping and doing some editing to it after ..
minimal is quite a challenge with an insect in the wild ..

for this shot i changed the picture style in the camera and boosted the sharpness, contrast and saturation ..

dont know why the shoehorn comment ... as i especially went out looking for a close-up to satisfy the challenge .. what am i missing here .. ;)

Oh... sorry about the shoehorn comment. I think of this image as a fly. And thought you'd added "closeup" to fit the challenge topic.
